Agricultural economist, Wandile Sihlobo, says the huge amount of rains pushed farmers to plant more maize.
Sihlobo says they increased the area they plant from 2 million to about 2.6 million hectors after getting an incentive from a good rainy season.
He also says South Africa could become the net exporters of soya beans for the first time, and food prices are likely to drop.
