Some Upswing in South Africa’s Grain Production Estimates

South Africa is in for a fairly good harvest in 2017/18 production season. This was confirmed by the third production forecasts released by the National Crop Estimate Committee this afternoon. All summer crop production estimates were revised up from previous month’s levels, with the exception of dry beans. In the same vein, winter crop farmers intend to increase the area plantings this upcoming season.

SA wheat planting could slow in the coming weeks

(Afrikaans) The winter wheat planting activity could slow in the coming weeks as the weather forecasts show a possibility of continued dryness in the Western Cape province within the next two weeks. Swartland is the only wheat-growing region that could receive light showers of between 16 and 25 millimetres this week. The prospects for the week ending 22 May 2018 presents similar dynamics, with light showers in areas around Overberg region.

The countries performing better than South Africa were the US, Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, Russia, France, Romania and Hungary. These countries collectively accounted for 88 percent of global maize exports in 2017
